The last harvest is set in a once bustling town isolated from the rest of the kingdom by a dense forest and rocky terrain. The group takes place in the aftermath of a war between kingdoms. Since the day the sky turned inky black, those living in the town have not received any news of the war's outcome. No letters from loved ones, no ravens with royal decrees, any travelling merchants or trade is only with small villages nearby. Though some are in denial, most accept whatever did happen that day. It is unlikely to be in their favour.With many nobles hidden in the town and the consistent disappearance of anyone who tries to travel to the country's capital for answers. The residents are forced to wait and stay hidden in case their country is ultimately lost. The duke of the area has taken charge, and everyone must do their part to rebuild and withstand the strange things that have begun to stir within the forest.

The flowers sprout from one's flesh is the physical manifestation of an impactful experience, relationship, or primary personality trait. Only infants lack any flowers. Occasionally, carnations will bloom due to a strong parental bond for the baby. But for the most part, a toddler is the age when blossoms begin to appear.The flowers are relatively permanent. If pulled out, they grow back. (It is painful to pull them out, roots tangled in muscle) If a stem is cut, the head of the plant isn't gone for long. They may lose their petals in the winter, but they'll grow back once in a warm home. Fire and thick scarred skin seem to be the only way to prevent growth in a particular area of the body.However, just as we grow and change, so do the flowers. For example, a person who falls out of love or has healed from an awful experience will have flowers that symbolize said emotions/memory wilt away—eventually replaced by a new experience, a new love.
Flowers are celebrated, for the most part. For kids, it's a sign of growing up, like losing your first tooth. For elders, it symbolizes a well-lived life rich in experiences. Flowers are also believed to contain magic and are plucked for medicinal purposes. Finally, it can be seen as a romantic gesture or incredibly creepy/Unhinged to gift someone a flower of yours.When an elder nears death, the flowers that dapple their skin begin to overtake them. For some families, there is a practice of when the old feels their time is near. They head to the graveyard to sit among the plants of past loved ones and wait to become one with the garden. Regardless of age, once dead, a body quickly is covered by flowers, their remains now a nursery for new sprouts.Graveyards are very special and are more like gardens than a field of stones.The variation, size, quantity and quality of flowers depend on the individual. Though it is more inconvenient to be covered in a layer of plants versus your neighbour who has only a few roses and daisies on her head. It is typically a desired trait to have many flowers. Even if those flowers stem from a traumatic event, the public views many flowers as a sign of experience, respect, and a rich character.

Some may come from wealthier backgrounds, a parent involved in a successful business or a wealthy merchant. However, a commoner can't outdo a Noble in the fancy bitch department. For the most part, commoners make up the lower and middle classes.There is a lot of variety in terms of occupations. Please keep in mind your oc is currently living in a large town in the woods. If you are still determining if a job you want fits the vibe, just hit up the mods! Some job examples are baker, carpenter, resident hoe and professional homewrecker, hairdresser, seamstress, or a lady with a chicken hoarding problem, so she sells eggs to afford more chickens.There's a small market in the town for people to sell goods from stands. And due to the high amount of abandoned buildings in the town, owning a store for your business is cheaper than elsewhere.The war is a backdrop to the setting, less so the group's focus. Your character could have fought in the war, had their old home wrecked, just wanted a change in scenery, or has always lived in the current location. As long as, story-wise, they've been in the town since the day the sky went black (3 months ago), you are Gucci.

You are the best.In terms of what is required on the written app, members must specify the title, Family name (typically nature themed), and a brief background on why they have the title/the significance of the family. Lastly, please state the reason your oc ends up in the town.
Like commoners, please try to have your oc in the town for the past 2-4 months around the time the sky went black.

It's a long list, and definitions vary based on the google search, but these are the main titles you can play with for your ocs background! You can create lore for your oc's noble family, but please be mindful that you are not the only one playing in the sandbox.Currently, there are no restrictions on how many higher-ranked titles can be filled vs lower. But it's encouraged to keep higher ranks uncommon. We'll make an announcement if there are a ton of dukes compared to barons and lords.

Reason for residence

Your character's reason for being in the town is the most essential information narrative-wise. The town itself is no stranger to hosting royalty. Home to one of the oldest temples dedicated to Mother Nature, it's ubiquitous for heirs and other noble children to be sent to the town for a few months to ensure a proper understanding of the country's history and primary religion. During these stays, they most often live in the temple. There is a vast and ancient Library in the town. However, many valuable books were moved to the capital city years back.

Another reason for your noble currently living in town is they were sent by their family to hide away during the war. Or they were forced to flee when their home was overtaken, or a vital battle for territory was lost. The town, larger than most, is isolated, protected, and not well known by those who don't live in the country—making it a perfect spot to wait out the war. The only issue is A: the war might still be occurring, and B: this country has likely lost the war. Either way, it's your ocs best interest to stay and wait.

You oc can stay in the temple or take over one of the many abandoned homes to live in. Be mindful though you are of higher status than many in the town. Augustus is the only one with real power in this micro-ecosystem. He favours nobles but this may not last forever. If the kingdom has truly lost the war, you are an heir of nothing.What value does an heir of nothing hold compared to a commoner?

Set-up
Many capable young men and women left their comfortable lives during the war to protect their kingdoms. Though many do not like to admit it, the country was burning through their trained soldiers at an alarming rate. Within the months leading up to the
'black sky", commoners were offered the chance to become a knight to fluff up the king's army.Around this time, knights, guards, and soldiers began to abandon their comrades. Typically fleeing from the battle would mark one a traitor, destined for execution for their cowardice and betrayal. However, the strange circumstances of this town have created an exception from standard punishment. The town holds a concentration of nobility, greater than any place currently in the country. A city whose many capable fighters left to aid in the war and never returned. They need protection and are not picky as long as you can yield a weapon and take orders.

Specifically for those who worked for a noble (be it a lord or the royal family) and did not come for the town. However, all knights fall under the Augustus Cecil and the head warden's word due to the town's situation and the need for soldiers. However, they can still favour the care of nobles/bodyguards.

Fighting experience
Fighting experience in your character's background can vary, but with this status, they must currently have an occupation as a guard/soldier in the town. Their history, however, has a lot of room to play with.
Your character can be a proper knight, a low-ranking soldier, a bodyguard, a hitman, a crook, or a guy who lied and said he knows how to yield a sword to get the job.

Expectations
There's a fair amount of wiggle room regarding how you play with the guard status, but a few things are set in stone.✦ You must follow Augustus's orders, or there will be narrative consequences for your character. Such as removal of status, physical punishment, scars/some brutality, your familiar being killed, or other angsty outcomes.✦You are expected to be a protector. Again, your character can be a little bitch and bail, but narratively, there will be consequences that vary in severity.✦ Your job will be referred to as a "guard." You can go into detail about what they favour, a skilled knight protecting this town or a lowly soldier that tends to do patrols. With the selection looming, tension among those of senior rank is high.The Anther of the town makes sporadic appearances to the public and is mainly locked away deep within the temple, communing with the earth. Giving orders to those below him while hidden behind a silk blanket with one candle lighting his silhouette. It's creepy as fuck, bro might be turning into the mole man, and we would have no idea. But, his word is the law.
Where the Anther living in the capital was said to represent nature's kindness, this man embodies nature's cruelty.

Songbird is a term used to describe Priests/Priestess that walk a path in Mother Nature’s shadow. Essentially they are eco-nuns that worship Mother Nature. They want to ensure the good health of both humans and flora alike.
The primary religion in this part of the world, though not every citizen, is as devoted as the birds. It’s hard to argue the authenticity of their beliefs when magic flowers grow from your skin.

What do they do?

Songbirds serve multiple roles within a community. But one of their most valued skills is their mastery over medicines. Temples hold writing from ancient civilizations within their walls. These books have advanced medical techniques within their pages that can sometimes compare to current real-world modern practices. In this setting, limitations stem more from a lack of “ ancient equipment/tools” and less from a lack of knowledge. This information is kept from the public eye for fear history will repeat itself.
Those who aren’t necessarily passionate about spreading the good word often join temples to be trained as healers. Doctors outside the religion exist, but practising medicine without being a songbird is the equivalent of working without a medical license. Other everyday duties can include caretakers for children, the elderly, and those nearing death. They clean temples, weed the graveyard gardens, aid the community where they can, and often are leaders in hosting festivals. Songbirds are helpers at heart. They can be preachy standing high on that soap box but are generally seen as kind, wise, and pristine.

The temple

A monument carved from their mother's bones. The temple is a stunning display of the birds' dedication. A complex building built into a cliff that edges the town to the south. An extraordinary sight, large chunks of bone similar to ribs branch from the stone walls. Tiny shells and what is likely the fossilized remains of fish lost to this world melted into the floor and walls.The temple consists of an intricate network of tunnels and rooms that become trickery to navigate the deeper one goes. The deeper part of the temple, the darker it becomes natural light unable to reach the depths. To make up for this, large tanks and hanging bowls are filled with bioluminescent jellyfish that seem fine with fresh water. Their light is believed to help heal wilting flowers.Those unfamiliar with how rooms bleed into each other will inevitably become lost once past public areas of worship. It's not recommended to wonder if you're not a part of the flock. You could get lost or get in trouble for reading something meant only for avian eyes.The temple was built first, then the town. One of the oldest places of worship in the country, even if the once bustling city's population has decreased. There is still a steady flow of little lost birds seeking a flock and an education. There is a wing within the temple with multiple rooms for birds, those seeking shelter, and nobles visiting to ensure their faith is strong and knowledge of the world's history is sharp.

Other things to note

Praying is done by pressing one’s hands against their chest and crossing their thumbs. More intense praying includes having the elbows raised.The temple does have a form of prayer beads. Each strand of beads is personal to a bird. Hand-made by them consisting of seeds, stones, bones, dried fruits, charred wood, and water/liquid of some form. The beads can include anything but incorporate different aspects of nature fire = charred wood, plants = seeds. The vile can be filled with anything, but typically it’s water from a lake or somewhere meaningful.✦ It is considered a meaningful gift to be given a set of beads you’ve made to someone else.

The location the group takes place in.
This town was once a great city comparable to the kingdom's capital. However, it's said Augustus great great great grandfather courted the king's favourite maid (though others say it was the king's wife). In retaliation, when new roads were created, the layout veered far from orchard hollow, making it difficult to reach. The king also moved the most valued text in the city's library to the kingdom's capital.
Lastly, a fire took out a fair amount of the city in the following years, leaving room for the forest to eat up the land.All these factors lead to a decline in the city's population over generations. The duke now feels more like a mayor. Most of his land is now wilderness with small villages around its border.However, the isolated nature of the town makes it the ideal location to hide from the fighting.

Particularly in smaller villages.In noble families, if there's going to be favouritism present for a specific sex, it tends to be with this group.

The Garland royal family broke their promise to have the princess marry the other kingdom's prince.There has always been tension between the two kingdoms. Petty fights, and dangerous borders, this was the straw that broke the camel's back.

The day of the black sky marks the day communications went silent.
The war efforts had been ongoing for almost a year, but Four months ago, in the early afternoon, the sky turned an inky black. There were no clouds, but the sun still shined as normal. The sun fell, and the moon glowed, but it was only at dawn when the darkness faded as the sun lifted back into the sky.
Everything seemed normal, but far in the distance, the castle's silhouette was now stained the same blackness that filled the sky.The villages nearby report some of their roofs are stained a similar colour. Those brave enough to climb the highest trees in the forests surrounding the town have noted the tips of leaves are stained.After this event, the town has not received any information on the kingdom's state and the war. Those who travel out to learn of what has happened never return. So the town is forced to sit, wait, and prepare.

Is there magic?

TLH has a cryptic magic system, less so direct spells or fireballs.

The flowers that grow from one's skin makes it hard to deny the magical touch the world has. But for the most part, magic is more a blend of folklore, spirituality, nature, and science without a name. It exists, but not in a way easily understood and not in a way any can genuinely control.For the most part, the magic that shows up in this group relates back to plants and nature. Take familiars, for example, the entire process looks pretty magical, but they are still plants using animal bones to make their form.
Most believe the flowers grown from flesh have magical properties, and they'd be right to do so. Medicinal practices often require one's petals. And in a more angst-driven route, black markets selling stolen flowers to improve things such as fertility are an occurrence in this country.There are witches afoot, or at least many a villager believes a witch is to blame when tragedy occurs. Stories mothers tell their children not to trample any flower beds, less a demon reaches up and drags you under the soil.As the group moves forward, strange "magical" events and entities will stir the pot.

The setting world is a mixture of rustic homes, humble beginnings, wood stoves, and strange advancements that feel out of place.

Phones, radios, or motorized vehicles of any kind don't exist.
It's very much a kingdom/fantasy setting.However, electricity exists, and strange trinkets are considered "ancient technology" created by a civilization lost to the sands of time. Solar panels, hydroelectricity, and whatever the fuck is happening with the potato battery.Only those who understand the complexity can set up or create duplicates of these artifacts. So often, what technology is available is worn, testing god if it'll work this time. To an extent, there is pushback on expanding knowledge further of what can be achieved with the aid of artifacts such as these. The clothing style for this group is best described as dark academia throws down with a cottage-core aesthetic in the fabric section of your local Walmart.

Popular fashion trends within the country put a lot of focus on colour, nature-themed accessories, layers, and patterns. Patterns, in particular with flora or animal themes, are a must. Often patterns are patchworks of designs similar to a grandmother's quilt.Pastels, rich and warmer colours, these bright pops of colour emphasize the kingdom's celebration and love of flowers, with no particular colour associated with gender. However, rich green is seen as a mature colour, and bright blue is related to the kingdom's primary religion.In terms of layers, clothing tends to be on the cozy side for ordinary folk, cloaks, with a layered sweater and scarf. Fur-lined clothing and dresses that bloom like petals. Patterns are more simplistic, with only one or two primary designs. Less symmetrical, or patchwork in style. Familiars

✿Witch's Nursery✿

Familiars are born from tree roots and bone. A mass grave for pets and past meals left to marinate till they are ready to bind to a living.

An old practice once common among villages. The community would feed a chosen tree scraps and bones from hunts. Families would bury cherished pets, and children would leave the remains of rodents they found on the roadside.Marination would take 10-20 years before the tree, now dried and dead in appearance, would bloom scarlet leaves, with wildflowers bursting from the tree's base as if they were arms reaching to grab something. This was the cue that a nursey was ready for the village to cut away the branches.
Each community member replants their own tree trimming and waits for their familiar to grow.
Using white pearl bones as a framework to give shape, familiars will take forms similar to the offering given. Each familiar is born with their own quirks, the seasoning of the scraps impacting the creature's character.

The practice ended abruptly when one village began burying their dead within the nursery.

What is the deal with the familiar?

Everyone in the group, once we get the ball rolling, will be given a plant pet. The town will discover a witch's nursery in the depths of the woods, and though the practice is banned considering their situation, extra protection is worth the risk.

You do not get to pick your familiar (random generation), but your choices during the familiar event will impact certain traits of your familiar.

Familiar Details

Familiars are very much alive but should not be mistaken as animals. Soft and warm with natural colours and markings, these entities are plants that take on the shape of animals offered to the tree. They have animal bones within and sap that mimics blood.A familiar will only bond with one person. A sick familiar can be used as an indicator that their partner is unwell.If their human dies, a familiar dies with them. If a familiar dies, the human lives. However, those who have lost their familiar report never being able to feel warm.

How to join?

Writing, creating, and drawing a character takes time and effort. We are not gunning for your character. But it is important you know the vibe of the group! The group has oc death and oc brutality/punishments (as a result of in-character actions), but that is not the focus of every event.We're going for a mix of fluff and angst✦ Oc death will have warnings and, most importantly, result from member consent and narrative choices. HOWEVER, YOUR FAMILIAR is fair game if the dice/chance rolls poorly. Many random prompts and events put your familiar at risk, and if things go wrong, your familiar will die. If your plant dog dies, your oc will get a new one, but the angst will be present.✦ Less important currently, but something we do want to make members aware of. Your character's status (guard/songbird/etc.) does influence the odds of you receiving particular narrative prompts. AS well as the relationship you have with your familiar.Example:Guards: more likely to receive a prompt about protecting othersSongbird: more likely to receive a prompt about healingPrompts can be wholesome, silly, involve multiple characters, angsty, or dangerous.A prompt requires you to either draw/write/ or rp/hc out (if there are multiple characters involved) your character's reactions to the prompt given. Npcs are background characters that relate to your/or another player character in some way. They shouldn't fill in a niche a player character could.For example, do not make a baker NPC that owns a bakery your oc likes to go to. There are player characters that are bakers. Hit them up instead.By buying an NPC slot, you can rp with said NPC, and even hc if you want. Just don't go crazy, as this is an NPC, not a player character. People will get confused, I WILL GET CONFUSED.Just rping a random NPC for a joke, or a one-off thing, like a random little kid your oc is helping find their doll, or an NPC maiden cooing at how hot your oc is no biggy.
